Pakistan came close to withdrawing from the tournament in solidarity with Bangladesh, who pulled out after refusing to play in India, citing security concerns.

The Pakistan government eventually cleared the team’s participation but it barred them from facing India in Colombo in a blockbuster clash on February 15.

With two points for a win, a forfeit of the match will leave Pakistan with no margin for error if they are to progress as one of the top two from a five-team Group A.

It means they must win their opening game against the Netherlands in Colombo on Saturday and beat the United States three days later to stay in contention.

Their final group game will be against Namibia on February 18.

Captain Salman Agha said the move to boycott the India game was out of the team’s hands.

“That is not our decision. We have to follow what our government decides,” he said.

The Pakistan government has not said what their stance might be if the team were to end up facing India again in the semi-finals or final. Agha was not thinking about that.

“Our job is to win, and we are capable of doing that,” he said.

Pakistan will be keen to avoid a repeat of the last T20 World Cup in 2024, where a shock super over defeat to co-hosts the United States led to them failing to get out of the group.

The side has since faced criticism for failing to adapt to the modern demands of T20 cricket, with the batting, particularly Babar Azam’s low strike rate, under scrutiny.

The criticism was fuelled by Pakistan’s record last year, where 21 of their 34 T20 international wins came against lower-ranked opponents.

– Confidence restored –

Against elite teams, the results were sobering: three losses to India in the Asia Cup and a 4-1 series defeat to New Zealand.

However, Agha believes recent performances have restored confidence.

Pakistan beat South Africa 2-1, won a home tri-series, and then completed a 3-0 sweep of an under-strength Australia.

“We’ve had good preparation by beating Australia. We have the luxury of quality spinning all-rounders like Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan and Saim Ayub.

“We’re ticking most boxes and believe we can win the World Cup,” Agha said.

The spin department has been strengthened by Abrar Ahmed and Usman Tariq, the latter known for his unusual, slingy action and exaggerated pause at the crease.

The pace attack is led by the experienced Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.

Faheem Ashraf provides seam-bowling all-round support and newcomer Salman Mirza has been impressive.

Batting remains Pakistan’s most volatile component.

When openers Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan provide strong starts, the side can post competitive totals, but collapses remain a constant threat.

Head coach Mike Hesson has added another layer of risk by leaving out experienced wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan because of poor form, opting instead for makeshift options in Usman Khan, Khawaja Nafay and Farhan.

For Pakistan, the ingredients for a deep run are present, but with points potentially forfeited, there is little room left for error.

It marked the second BPL triumph for a Rajshahi-based franchise, having previously lifted the trophy in the 2019–20 season under the name Rajshahi Royals.

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul handed the BPL trophy to Rajshahi captain Najmul Hossain Shanto as chief guest.

A scintillating century from opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim steered the Rajshahi to a formidable 174-4, a total that proved far beyond Chattogram’s reach.

Rajshahi’s bowlers then tore through the Royals’ batting lineup, wrapping them up for just 111 in 17.5 overs, with Sri Lankan pacer Binura Fernando leading the demolition with superb figures of 4-9.

Put in to bat first, Rajshahi got off to a flying start through Tanzid and fellow opener Sahibzada Farhan.

The duo stitched together an 83-run opening stand, with Tanzid taking the attacking route. Farhan was dismissed for a run-a-ball 30 by pacer Mukidul Islam Mugdho, bringing an end to the threatening partnership.

Kane Williamson then provided able support to Tanzid to keep the innings on track. The New Zealand star played a brisk knock of 24 off 15 balls before falling to Shoriful Islam while attempting a big hit.

Tanzid, however, carried on in commanding fashion. He brought up his third T20 century off 61 balls with a single, showcasing a blend of power and composure. His superb knock finally ended on 100 off 62 deliveries, an innings studded with six fours and seven sixes, as Mugdho struck again.

Mugdho and Shoriful were the standout bowlers for Chattogram, claiming two wickets each, but the damage had already been done.

Chattogram’s chase never really took off after Binura Fernando delivered an early double blow, dismissing Naim Sheikh (9) and Mahmudul Hasan Joy for a duck within three balls.

Left-arm spinner Hasan Murad, who returned figures of 3-15 from four overs, further dented the chase by removing Hasan Nawaz, and from there it became a one-way contest.

Rajshahi kept striking at regular intervals, choking the flow of runs and piling on the pressure. Opener Mirza Baig tried to resist, but his laborious 39-run knock ended when he was stumped off Hasan Murad, leaving Chattogram struggling at 92-6.

Asif Ali played a brief cameo of 21 off 16 balls, hitting one four and two sixes, to take the side past 100, but it only reduced the margin of defeat as Rajshahi sealed a comprehensive victory to lift the trophy.

“There is no scope to change our decision. We believe we did not receive justice from the ICC, but we still hope the ICC will reconsider its decision,” he told reporters after a meeting with Bangladesh cricketers and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials at a city hotel.

He said the meeting with the players was arranged to provide them with a first-hand briefing on the situation following the ICC’s rejection of the BCB’s request to relocate Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka.

“The ICC claims that the security situation in India is good enough to host cricket, but what we see is that the situation remains unchanged. Our security concerns did not arise out of thin air; they stemmed from a real incident,” he said.

Referring to national team pacer Mustafizur Rahman, the adviser added, “One of our players was withdrawn from playing in the IPL because the organisers could not ensure his proper security when faced with pressure from extremist groups.”

“When the security of a single player cannot be guaranteed, how can security be ensured for an entire contingent that includes players, officials, journalists, and other stakeholders?” he questioned.

Asif Nazrul also expressed dissatisfaction with how the ICC handled the issue, stating that the governing body focused on standard security protocols while ignoring the incident that triggered Bangladesh’s grievances.

According to him, neither the ICC nor the Indian government made any effort to address Bangladesh’s security issues.

“There were no outreach, no apology, no explanation of the measures being taken, and no effort to reassure the safety of our players, journalists, or spectators,” he said.

The match kicks off at 4 pm (BST).

Bangladesh currently stand second position in the points table with seven points from four matches while Pakistan following Bangladesh closely also with seven points playing the same number of matches.

Earlier, the Bangladesh team played to a fighting 4-4 goals draw with India in their tournament opening match, suffered 6-1 goal defeat to Maldives in their second match.

However, Bangladesh fought back to register a 4-1 victory over Nepal in their third match and inflicted a massive 5-1 defeat on Sri Lanka in their fourth match.

While Pakistan lost to Maldives 7-1, beat Bhutan 4-2, defeated Sri Lanka 5-2 and played out to a 4-4 draw with Nepal.

After Pakistan, Bangladesh will play the last match of the championship against Nepal on Saturday (Jan 24) at the same venue.

The table toppers at the end of all seven rounds of matches will be crowned the first-ever SAFF Men’s Futsal champions.

উপদেষ্টা বলেন,খেলাধুলা আমাদের মধ্যে পজিটিভ এনার্জি তৈরি করে। খেলাধুলা তরুণ সমাজকে মাদকমুক্ত রাখে এবং আদর্শ তরুণ সমাজ গঠনে ভূমিকা রাখে। ঢাকা শহরে পর্যাপ্ত খেলার মাঠের অভাব রয়েছে, অনেক মাঠ দখল হয়ে গেছে। অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকার দখলকৃত মাঠগুলো পুনরুদ্ধারের উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে। তিনি বলেন, সকল মাঠ উদ্ধার করা সম্ভব না হলেও আমরা এই সময়ের মধ্যে চোখে পড়ার মতো খেলার মাঠ উদ্ধার করতে পারবো বলে আশা করছি।

উপদেষ্টা আরো বলেন, অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকার ঢাকা নর্থ সিটিকে একটি মডেল সিটিতে রূপান্তর করার উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করছে যাতে করে সকল নগরবাসী এর সুফল পায় এবং সুন্দর নগর জীবনের প্রতিফলন ঘটাতে পারে।
