এ উপলক্ষে তিনি মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী তারেক রহমান, স্বাস্থ্যমন্ত্রী, সরদার মো. সাখাওয়াত হোসেন (বকুল), এসেনসিয়াল ড্রাগস কোম্পানি লিমিটেড-এর সর্বস্তরের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীবৃন্দ এবং দেশের সর্বস্তরের জনগণকে আন্তরিক শুভেচ্ছা, অভিনন্দন ও শুভকামনা জানান।

তিনি বলেন, পহেলা বৈশাখ আমাদের ঐতিহ্য, সংস্কৃতি ও সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতির প্রতীক। এই উৎসব সকল ভেদাভেদ ভুলে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়ে সামনে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার অনুপ্রেরণা জোগায়। তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করেন, বাংলা নববর্ষ বাঙালির জীবনে বয়ে আনবে শান্তি, সমৃদ্ধি ও নতুন সম্ভাবনা। পরিশেষে তিনি দেশবাসীর সুখ, শান্তি ও সমৃদ্ধি কামনা করেন।

উল্লেখ্য, মোঃ আঃ সামাদ মৃধা বর্তমানে এসেনসিয়াল ড্রাগস্ কোম্পানী লিমিটেড-এর ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন।  এছাড়া তিনি জাতীয়তাবাদী ছাত্রদল কেন্দ্রীয় নির্বাহী কমিটির সাবেক সহকারি কোষাধ্যক্ষ এবং ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ফজলুল হক হল শাখার সাবেক সাধারণ সম্পাদক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন।

তিনি এসেনসিয়াল ড্রাগস কোম্পানি লিমিটেড-এর ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব গ্রহণের পর প্রতিষ্ঠানটিকে একটি সর্বাধিক উৎপাদনশীল ও লাভজনক প্রতিষ্ঠানে রূপান্তরিত করেছেন। তাঁর দক্ষ ও দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বে প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিভিন্ন অনিয়ম ও দুর্নীতি দূর করা হয়েছে। অপ্রয়োজনীয় লোকবল হ্রাস, ক্রয় সংক্রান্ত দুর্নীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণ এবং ওষুধের দাম কমিয়েও প্রতিষ্ঠানটিকে লাভজনক অবস্থানে নিয়ে আসা সম্ভব হয়েছে।
তাঁর প্রত্যক্ষ তত্ত্বাবধানে বর্তমানে এসেনসিয়াল ড্রাগস কোম্পানি লিমিটেড-এ সর্বোচ্চ গুণগত মানসম্পন্ন ওষুধ উৎপাদন করা হচ্ছে, যা দেশের স্বাস্থ্যখাতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখছে।

পুরনো বছরের জীর্ণতা, গ্লানি ও শোককে বিদায় জানিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে নতুন প্রাণের উৎসব- ‘পহেলা বৈশাখ, ১৪৩৩ বঙ্গাব্দ’। হাজার বছরের ইতিহাস ও ঐতিহ্যের মেলবন্ধনে গড়ে ওঠা এ দিনটি এখন জাতি, ধর্ম ও বর্ণের ঊর্ধ্বে উঠে সর্বজনীন উৎসবে পরিণত হয়েছে। দেশ-বিদেশে ছড়িয়ে থাকা কোটি কোটি বাংলাদেশি একযোগে মেতে উঠেছেন বর্ষবরণের আনন্দে।

দিবসটি উপলক্ষে রাষ্ট্রপতি মো. সাহাবুদ্দিন ও প্রধানমন্ত্রী তারেক রহমান পৃথক বার্তায় দেশবাসীকে শুভেচ্ছা জানিয়েছেন।

রাষ্ট্রপতি তার বার্তায় ঐক্য, সম্প্রীতি ও নতুন প্রত্যয়ের আহ্বান জানিয়ে বলেন, বাংলা নববর্ষ আমাদের প্রাণের সর্বজনীন উৎসব। এটি আমাদের ঐক্য, সম্প্রীতি, ও অসাম্প্রদায়িক চেতনার এক উজ্জ্বল দৃষ্টান্ত।’

রাষ্ট্রপতি বলেন, ‘জাতি, ধর্ম ও বর্ণেও ভেদাভেদ অতিক্রম করে পহেলা বৈশাখ আমাদের সবার জন্য হয়ে ওঠে এক আনন্দ ও মিলনের দিন। আমাদের গৌরবময় ঐতিহ্য, সমৃদ্ধ সংস্কৃতি এবং আত্মপরিচয়ের ধারক ও বাহক হিসেবে এ উৎসবের গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। বৈশাখের আগমনে আমাদের জীবনে জাগে নতুন প্রত্যাশা, নব প্রতিশ্রুতি ও অসীম সম্ভাবনার স্বপ্ন। অতীতের গ্লানি, বেদনা ও ব্যর্থতাকে পেছনে ফেলে আমরা এগিয়ে চলি নব উদ্যমে ও নব প্রত্যয়ে।’

প্রধানমন্ত্রী তারেক রহমান বলেছেন, পহেলা বৈশাখ আমাদের জাতিসত্তার ইতিহাস, সংস্কৃতি ও আত্মপরিচয়ের এক অনন্য প্রতীক। শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী ধরে এই দিনটি আমাদের জীবনে প্রতি বছর ফিরে আসে নতুনের আহ্বান নিয়ে। নতুন বছরের আগমনে পুরোনো জীর্ণতা ও গ্লানি পেছনে ফেলে সামনে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার প্রেরণা জোগায়।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘পহেলা বৈশাখের সঙ্গে আমাদের এ অঞ্চলের কৃষি, প্রকৃতি এবং কৃষিভিত্তিক অর্থনৈতিক কার্যক্রমের সম্পর্ক নিবিড়। তথ্যপ্রযুক্তির এই সুবর্ণ সময়েও প্রকৃতির সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্য রেখেই কৃষক তার ফসল উৎপাদনের দিনক্ষণ ঠিক করে। বাংলার হাজার বছরের ঐতিহ্য, লোকজ সংস্কৃতি, কৃষ্টি ও মূল্যবোধের ধারাবাহিকতা পহেলা বৈশাখের মাধ্যমে নতুন করে উজ্জীবিত হয়।’

তিনি বলেন, বৈশাখি মেলা, শোভাযাত্রা, হালখাতার মতো ঐতিহ্যবাহী আয়োজন আমাদের সংস্কৃতির বহুমাত্রিক সৌন্দর্যকে তুলে ধরে এবং আমাদেরকে ঐক্যবোধে উজ্জীবিত করে। বাংলা নববর্ষ আমাদের সামনে এনেছে নতুন প্রত্যাশা ও নতুন সম্ভাবনা। প্রকৃতির নবজাগরণ আর মানুষের অন্তরের আশাবাদ মিলেমিশে সৃষ্টি করে এক প্রাণবন্ত উৎসবমুখর পরিবেশ।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, দীর্ঘ দেড় দশকের ফ্যাসিবাদী শোষণ-শাসনের অবসানের পর গত ১২ ফেব্রুয়ারি অনুষ্ঠিত জাতীয় নির্বাচনে বিজয়ী হয়ে যাত্রা শুরু করে নতুন গণতান্ত্রিক সরকার। দায়িত্ব নিয়েই এই সরকার রাষ্ট্র এবং সমাজের সব শ্রেণি পেশার মানুষের জীবন মানোন্নয়নে বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচি বাস্তবায়ন শুরু করেছে।

তিনি জানান, নির্বাচনি অঙ্গীকার বাস্তবায়নের অংশ হিসেবে সরকার ইতোমধ্যেই ফ্যামিলি কার্ড, ক্রীড়া কার্ড, খাল খনন কর্মসূচি চালু, ইমাম, মুয়াজ্জিন, খতিব এবং অন্য ধর্মের ধর্মগুরুদের জন্য আর্থিক সহায়তা কর্মসূচি চালু করেছে। কৃষক, কৃষি এবং কৃষি অর্থনীতির সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত বাংলা নববর্ষের প্রথম দিন থেকে শুরু হলো কৃষক কার্ড প্রদান কর্মসূচি। আগামী দিনগুলোতে এই কৃষক কার্ড বাংলাদেশের কৃষক এবং কৃষি অর্থনীতিতে যুগান্তকারী ভূমিকা রাখতে সক্ষম হবে, বাংলা নববর্ষে এটিই হোক আমাদের প্রত্যয় ও প্রত্যাশা।

তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করে বলেন, ‘বাংলাদেশের জনগণের যার যার ধর্মীয় ও সামাজিক মূল্যবোধ এবং সংস্কৃতির অন্তর্নিহিত সহনশীলতা, উদারতা ও সম্প্রীতির চর্চা গণতন্ত্রকে আরও শক্তিশালী করবে এবং বহুমতের সহাবস্থানকে সুদৃঢ় করবে। বিশ্ব আজ নানা সংকট ও সংঘাতে বিপর্যস্ত। এই প্রেক্ষাপটে শান্তি, সহমর্মিতা ও পারস্পরিক শ্রদ্ধাবোধের চর্চা আরও জরুরি হয়ে উঠেছে। নববর্ষের এই শুভক্ষণে আমরা যেন সংকীর্ণতা ও স্বার্থপরতার ঊর্ধ্বে উঠে মানবকল্যাণের পথ অনুসরণ করি- এই হোক আমাদের অঙ্গীকার। নতুন বছরের প্রথম প্রভাতে আমরা অতীতের সব হতাশা ও সীমাবদ্ধতা কাটিয়ে নতুন উদ্যমে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার প্রত্যয় ব্যক্ত করি।’

দেশবাসীকে আন্তরিক শুভেচ্ছা জানিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, নববর্ষ সবার জীবনে বয়ে আনুক সুখ, শান্তি ও সমৃদ্ধি।

রাজধানী ঢাকা, বিভাগীয় ও জেলা শহরের পাশাপাশি গ্রামবাংলাও মেতেছে বর্ষবরণের আনন্দে। নানা বয়সী নারী, পুরুষ ও শিশুরা বর্ণিল পোশাকে উদযাপন করছে দিনটি। বসেছে বৈশাখী মেলা। বিভিন্ন স্থানে আয়োজন করা হয়েছে বলিখেলা, লাঠিখেলা ও হা-ডু-ডুসহ ঐতিহ্যবাহী খেলাধুলার।

ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আয়োজন করা হয়েছে বর্ণাঢ্য শোভাযাত্রা। লোক-ঐতিহ্য ও স্বকীয়তা তুলে ধরে এতে সর্বস্তরের মানুষের অংশগ্রহণ নিশ্চিত করা হয়েছে। ‘শান্তি, মানবতা ও সম্প্রীতি’ প্রতিপাদ্যে রমনার বটমূলে ছায়ানটের শিল্পীরা সম্মিলিত কণ্ঠে পরিবেশন করছেন বর্ষবরণের গান, যা এ দিনের অন্যতম প্রধান আকর্ষণ।

উদীচী সকাল থেকে তোপখানা রোডে গান, কবিতা, আড্ডা ও নৃত্যের মধ্য দিয়ে বর্ষবরণ করছে। বিকেল ৪টায় তাদের মূল আয়োজন অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। এবারের প্রতিপাদ্য- ‘বৈশাখের রুদ্র-রোষে ধ্বংস হোক সামাজিক ফ্যাসিবাদ’।

জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাব ও ঢাকা রিপোর্টার্স ইউনিটি (ডিআরইউ) বর্ষবরণ উপলক্ষে নানা আয়োজন করেছে। সদস্য, তাদের পরিবার ও অতিথিদের জন্য রাখা হয়েছে বাঙালিয়ানার নানা আয়োজন।

ঢাকা দক্ষিণ সিটি করপোরেশনও বাংলা নববর্ষ উপলক্ষে সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেছে। সংস্কৃতি মন্ত্রণালয়ের ব্যবস্থাপনায় শিল্পকলা একাডেমি, বাংলা একাডেমিসহ বিভিন্ন সংগঠন সারাদেশে নানা কর্মসূচির মাধ্যমে দিবসটি উদযাপন করছে। রাজধানীর বিভিন্ন শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ও পাড়া-মহল্লায়ও নানা আয়োজনে মানুষ স্বাগত জানাচ্ছে ১৪৩৩ সালের প্রথম দিন।

তিনি বলেন, ‘স্বাধীনতার পর সংসদীয় ইতিহাসে এক অধিবেশনে এত বিপুল পরিমাণ বিল পাস বা অধ্যাদেশকে আইনে রূপান্তর করার নজির নেই।’

আজ রোববার বিকেলে সচিবালয়ে স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের সম্মেলন কক্ষে আয়োজিত এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।

সংবাদ সম্মেলনে অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের জারিকৃত ১৩৩টি অধ্যাদেশ জাতীয় সংসদে বিল আকারে পাসের বিষয়ে সাংবাদিকদের কাছে বিস্তারিত তথ্য তুলে ধরেন আইন, বিচার ও সংসদ বিষয়ক মন্ত্রী মো. আসাদুজ্জামান ও স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী সালাহউদ্দিন আহমদ।

অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের জারিকৃত ১৩৩টি অধ্যাদেশ জাতীয় সংসদে বিল আকারে পাসের প্রেক্ষাপট ও সরকারের সদিচ্ছা ব্যাখ্যা করতে গিয়ে চিফ হুইপ বলেন, ‘আমাদের একটি সদিচ্ছার ব্যাখ্যা আমি ছোট্ট করে দিতে চাই। আমাদের বাধ্যবাধকতা হলো— সকল বিল আইনে পরিণত করি অথবা ল্যাপস করি, যাই কিছু করি না কেন— তার সময় হলো ৩০ দিন। সংবিধানের ৯৩ অনুচ্ছেদ অনুযায়ী, এই ৩০ দিনের বাধ্যবাধকতা আমাদের বাস্তবায়ন করতে হয়েছে।’

তিনি বলেন, ‘১২ মার্চ পার্লামেন্ট বসেছে এবং সেদিনই আমরা সকল আইনগুলো উপস্থাপন করেছি। কিন্তু ১৩ ও ১৪ মার্চ শুক্র ও শনিবার হওয়ায় আমরা কাজ করতে পারিনি। এরপর শবে কদর ও ঈদের ছুটির কারণে ১৬ থেকে ২৯ মার্চ পর্যন্ত সংসদ বন্ধ ছিল। ফলে প্রথম ১৫ দিন আমরা মূলত কোনো কাজই করতে পারিনি।’

তিনি জানান, এই সীমিত সময়ের চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবিলায় অধিবেশনের প্রথম দিনই বিশেষ কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছিল। কমিটির সদস্যরা ঈদের ছুটির মধ্যেও তিনটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বৈঠক করেছেন। এই প্রক্রিয়ায় সর্বোচ্চ স্বচ্ছতা নিশ্চিত করতে বিরোধী দলীয় নেতৃবৃন্দের অনুরোধে একজন নিরপেক্ষ আইন বিশেষজ্ঞকে কমিটির সাথে যুক্ত করা হয়েছিল।

সরকারের ঐকান্তিক প্রচেষ্টার কথা উল্লেখ করে নূরুল ইসলাম বলেন, ‘এই বিলগুলো সম্পন্ন করতে আমি নিজে একেবারেই নির্ঘুম রাত কাটিয়েছি। এত বেশি অধ্যাদেশকে বিল আকারে পাসের কাজ স্বাধীনতার পরে আর কখনো হয়নি।’

তিনি আরও জানান, বিশেষ কমিটির পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ যাচাই-বাছাইয়ের পর গত ২ এপ্রিল প্রতিবেদন জমা দেওয়া হয়। সেই প্রতিবেদনের আলোকেই ১১০টি অধ্যাদেশকে আইনে রূপান্তর করা হয়েছে। বাকিগুলোর বিষয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। এটি বর্তমান সরকারের দায়িত্বশীলতা ও সংসদীয় গণতন্ত্রের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধারই বহিঃপ্রকাশ বলে উল্লেখ করেন তিনি।

আজ বাংলা নববর্ষ ১৪৩৩ উপলক্ষ্যে ঢাকায় বাংলাদেশ শিশু একাডেমি আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে মন্ত্রী এসব কথা বলেন।

মন্ত্রী বলেন, বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার ঘোষক শহীদ রাষ্ট্রপতি জিয়াউর রহমান যখন দেশ পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব পেয়েছিলেন, তখন তিনি অনুধাবন করতে পেরেছিলেন যে, ভবিষ্যতের চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবিলার জন্য শিশুদের যথাযথ পৃষ্ঠপোষকতা দেওয়া প্রয়োজন। সে লক্ষ্যেই তিনি বাংলাদেশ শিশু একাডেমি এবং শিশু পার্ক প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিলেন। শহীদ রাষ্ট্রপতি জিয়াউর রহমানের দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বের কারণেই জেলা পর্যায় পর্যন্ত শিশু একাডেমির পরিসর বিস্তৃত হয়েছে। যদিও পরবর্তীতে বিভিন্ন কারণে শিশু একাডেমি শিশুদের বিকাশের জন্য যথাযথ পৃষ্ঠপোষকতা পায়নি বলেও মন্তব্য করেন তিনি।

মন্ত্রী আরো বলেন, শিশুদের অধিকার আদায়ে বর্তমান সরকার অত্যন্ত সজাগ। প্রধানমন্ত্রী তারেক রহমানের নেতৃত্বাধীন সরকার প্রতিটি জেলায় এবং উপজেলা পর্যায় পর্যন্ত শিশুদের বিকাশের জন্য, লেখাপড়ার পাশাপাশি শিশুদের মননশীলতা ও চিন্তার পরিধির ব্যাপ্তিলাভ করানোর জন্য এবং শিশুদের আগামীর নেতৃত্ব প্রদানে পারদর্শী করে গড়ে তোলার জন্য সর্বাত্মকভাবে কাজ করছে।

অনুষ্ঠানে সভাপতির বক্তব্যে মহিলা ও শিশু বিষয়ক মন্ত্রণালয়ের সচিব ইয়াসমীন পারভীন বলেন, শিশু একাডেমি আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানে শিশুদের অংশগ্রহণ ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের মধ্যে দেশজ ও সংস্কৃতির বীজ বপনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মাধ্যম হিসেবে কাজ করবে। শিশুদের সৃজনশীল বিকাশের জন্য সকলকে একসঙ্গে কাজ করার আহ্বান জানান তিনি।

অনুষ্ঠানে স্বাগত বক্তব্য রাখেন বাংলাদেশ শিশু একাডেমির মহাপরিচালক মোছা. আরজু আরা বেগম। অনুষ্ঠানে অন্যান্যের মধ্যে উপস্থিত ছিলেন মন্ত্রী অধ্যাপক ডা. এ জেড এম জাহিদ হোসেনের সহধর্মিণী ডা. শরীফা করিম স্বর্ণা, মহিলা ও শিশু বিষয়ক মন্ত্রণালয়সহ এর অধীন দপ্তর-সংস্থাসমূহের ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তাগণ, বাংলাদেশ শিশু একাডেমির শিক্ষার্থী ও প্রশিক্ষকবৃন্দ, অভিভাবক এবং সাংবাদিকবৃন্দ।

সংক্ষিপ্ত আলোচনা শেষে বাংলাদেশ শিশু একাডেমির শিক্ষার্থীদের অংশগ্রহণে একাডেমি চত্বরে এক মনোজ্ঞ সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান পরিবেশিত হয়।

Shedding the sorrows, fatigue and burden of the outgoing year, the nation is embracing the New Year with renewed energy and optimism.

Deeply rooted in centuries of tradition, Pahela Baishakh has evolved into a universal festival that transcends religion, caste and ethnicity, bringing millions of Bangladeshis together at home and abroad.

The day stands as a powerful expression of cultural identity, patriotism and non-communal harmony. It carries the collective aspiration that darkness and despair will be replaced by light, truth and beauty, while the memories of the past year are left behind.

Different organisations have taken elaborate programmes to welcome the New Year.

Cultural organisations are hosting daylong events, with celebrations beginning at Ramna Batamul through the national anthem and the iconic song “Eso He Baishakh” at dawn.

Like previous years, the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University brought out the traditional procession – this time named ‘Baishakhi Shobhajatra’ with the theme ‘Harmony of the New Year, Revival of Democracy’.

Meanwhile, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have greeted the nation, in separate messages, extending New Year wishes to all citizens.

The President called for unity, harmony and renewed commitment, describing Pahela Baishakh as a ‘universal festival of the Bengali soul’.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Pahela Baishakh is a unique symbol of the nation’s history, culture and identity.

He noted that the festival has been returning for centuries with a message of renewal, inspiring people to overcome past hardships and move forward with determination.

The Premier, in his message, highlighted the deep connection between Pahela Baishakh and the country’s agricultural traditions, nature and rural economy.

People of all ages are celebrating the day in colourful traditional attire as Baishakhi fairs spring up across the country, featuring traditional games such as Boli Khela (traditional wrestling), lathi khela and ha-du-du.

In Chattogram, the historic ‘Jabbarer Bolikhela’ is being held at Laldighi Maidan marking its century-old tradition.

In Dhaka, this year’s Baishakhi Shobhajatra featured five key motifs- rooster, dotara (folk instrument), pigeon, elephant and horse, symbolising strength, creativity, peace, dignity and movement.

Around 35 musicians performed national songs including the national anthem and ‘Eso He Baishakh’, while 200 students participated carrying the national flag.

The Ramna Batamul celebration, organised by Chhayanaut, was once again present a morning of songs dedicated to peace, humanity and harmony- continuing one of the most iconic traditions of the day.

Udichi is also marking the occasion at Topkhana Road with a day-long programme of music, poetry and dance, themed ‘Let social fascism be destroyed in the fierce spirit of Baishakh’, with its main event scheduled at 4 pm.

Dhaka South City Corporation arranged cultural programmes under the theme ‘Let the lost joys of Bengal return in Baishakh’, while Art Pix is staging puppet shows from April 14 to 21 on the Bangladesh Military Museum premises near Bijoy Sarani.

Authorities, including Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and RAB, have taken special security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations across the capital.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, along with Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy and other cultural organisations, are observing the day nationwide through a variety of programmes.

The National Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity also hosted separate events marking the occasion.

Special arrangements are made to serve traditional food in prisons, hospitals and shishu poribar alongside cultural programmes for children.

All museums and archaeological sites remain open to commoners, with free entry for children, students and persons with disabilities.

At the local level, Baishakhi Shobhajatra and cultural events are being held in every district and upazila.

Local administration is also organising folk fairs and essay competitions for students at the district and upazila levels, while celebrations were arranged in union levels.

Educational institutions across the country are celebrating the occasion in a festive atmosphere under their own initiative.

Special programmes and traditional food are being arranged at hotels and clubs.

Meanwhile, authorities have ensured adequate medical facilities, toilets and safe drinking water around Suhrawardy Udyan and Ramna Park during the celebrations.

Business communities, especially in rural areas have opened their traditional ‘Halkhata’, new account books, while sweetmeats are being distributed among customers to mark the day.

The day is a public holiday.

Different national dailies published supplements while Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar are broadcasting special programmes, highlighting the significance of Pahela Baishakh.

“Pahela Baishakh reflects our tradition, culture, and harmony. Inspired by this festival, we must further enrich the country’s cultural arena,” he said.

He made the remarks today while attending separate Pahela Baishakh celebration programmes organized by cultural groups, Shruti and Anandalok, at Blue Bird School and College and Srihatta Sanskrit College premises in the city.

The minister stressed the need for ensuring proper recognition and support to artists, cultural activists, and organizers to enrich Bengali culture.

He noted that for a long time, various cultural organizations in Sylhet have been operating through personal initiatives and limited resources.

However, due to a lack of necessary logistical support, the cultural sector in the region has lagged behind compared to other parts of the country, he added.

Ariful also said discussions have already been held with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs regarding the issue, and a plan has been taken to construct a modern cultural complex in Sylhet in coordination with local representatives.

“The proposed complex will ensure all necessary facilities for cultural practices as well as training opportunities for children and young people,” he said.

On the occasion of the Bengali New Year, he urged all to move forward by overcoming past mistakes and to work collectively towards unity, harmony, and development.

“Bangladesh is a country of harmony, and the people of this region have set a bright example of it. This harmony will become even stronger and more enriched,” he remarked.

He also called upon the young generation to engage more actively in cultural activities, stating that a prosperous and developed Bangladesh will be built under the leadership of the new generation.

Among others present at the programme were Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, Second Secretary of the Indian High Commission Rajesh Bhatia, Sylhet District BNP Organizing Secretary Shamim Ahmed, singer Himangshu Biswas, theatre organizer Shamsul Bashir Shero, Anandalok Director Rana Kumar Singh, and Shruti Member Secretary Suka Gupta.

On the eve of the Pohela Boishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year, which will be celebrated throughout the country tomorrow, the Prime Minister said this in a message to the nation, according to an official handout here today.

After the fascist regime of long one and half decade, he said the new democratic government has started its journey following the landslide victory in the national elections held on February 12.

As part of the ruling BNP’s electoral pledges, the PM said the government has started distribution of family cards, sports cards, canal excavation programme, providing financial support to Imam, Muazzin, khatib and other religious leaders.

The Farmer’s Card distribution programme will be launched on Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year, he said in his message. “This farmers’ card will play a vital role for the peasants and agricultural economy of the country and it is our expectation ahead of the Bengali New Year”, he said.

Welcoming the Bengali New Year 1433, the PM greeted all the Bengali speaking people across the world including the nation, saying that the Pohela Boishakh is a unique symbol of our ethnicity history, culture and self identity.

This [Pohela Boishakh] return every year to our life for centuries through renewing a call afresh. The arrival of the New Year inspires us to go ahead after leaving behind the old decay and gloom, said the PM in his message.

Referring to the Pohela Boishakh which is inter-related with the agriculture of this region, nature and agro-based economic activities, the message elaborated that even in the golden age of the development of information technology, the farmers set his timeframe of crop production in line with the natural phenomenon.

Country’s thousand years old tradition, traditional folk culture, civilization and consistency of values revitalize afresh usually through the arrival of the Pohela Boishakh, said the message.

The traditional events like boishakhi mela, boishakhi sobhajatra, halkhata eventually uphold multidimensional beauty of our culture, he said, adding that so, the Bengali New Year has brought new expectation and new potentials in front us.

Expressing his pledge to pursue the path of people’s welfare through overcoming our narrow-mindedness and egoism, the PM hope that peoples of respective religious and cultural values and inherent tolerance of culture, generosity and practice of harmony will strengthen the democracy and fortify the coexistence of multiple opinions.

On the occasion of the Pahela Baishakh-1433, the premier digitally launched the programme by pressing a button on a laptop at 12:22pm at the inaugural ceremony at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Sadar Upazila here.

With pressing the button, Taka 2,500 was immediately reached out to accounts of 22,065 farmers simultaneously. A total of 1,453 farmers in Tangail received this money.

Later, Tarique Rahman, also ruling BNP chairman, directly handed over ‘Farmer Card’ and saplings of trees to 15 farmers. They are: Md Abu Kaiser, Md Roman, Shahnur Alam, Md Shah Alam, Julekha Akhtar, Nasima Khanam Sumana, Shilpi, Amena Begum, Nabab Ali, Mohammad Ali, Kabir Hossain, Mst Monowara Akhtar, Shamima Akhtar, Laila Begum and Tahmina.

Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid chaired the inaugural function while Prime Minister’s Adviser Md Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku spoke as special guests.

Agricultural Secretary Dr Rafiqul I Mohamed delivered the welcome address while Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in Bangladesh Jiaoqun Shi also spoke at the function.

On the occasion, one male and one female farmer shared their feelings.

Earlier, the Prime Minister entered the Shaheed Maruf Stadium at 11:20 am. Upon arrival at the venue, he went straight to the stage and greeted the farmers and agriculturists.

The inaugural ceremony began with recitations from the Holy Quran, Gita, Bible and Tripitaka.

Several thousand farmers along with ruling BNP leaders and supporters gathered at the stadium, creating a festive atmosphere on the Bangla New Year.

In line with the ruling BNP’s election pledges, the government is implementing the ‘Farmer Card’ to directly empower the farmers, who are considered the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy.

The initiative is also taken to integrate the agriculture sector with modern technology, protect farmers’ rights and improve their living standards.

PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin earlier said that in nearly two months since assuming office, the Prime Minister has already implemented many electoral pledges one after another.

He said the aim of the ‘Farmer Card’ is to protect farmers’ rights and improve their living standards.

In the first phase, Mahdi Amin said the programme is being launched in 11 upazilas across 10 districts while 30 lakhs farmers will be brought under the special card gradually.

On the inauguration day, he said, the Prime Minister distributed the card among 1,453 farmers in Tangail.

However, farmers have received the card under 11 blocks in 11 upazilas of the 10 districts.

The blocks are: Kamlapur block under Panchagarh Sadar upazila, Panchpir block under Boda upazila of Panchagarh district, Uthli block under Shibganj upazila of Bogura district, Kripalpur block under Shailokupa upazila of Jhenaidah district, Rajabari block under Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur district, Rajarchara block under Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district, Aryannapur block under Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila, Suruj block under Tangail Sadar upazila, Tenapocha block under Goalanda upazila of Rajbari district, Fultala block under Juri upazila of Moulvibazar district and Gaibandha block under Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district.

The ‘Farmer Card’ will be given to all farmers across the country under two more phases- pilot programme and nationwide rollout, while the farmers are being selected under five categories- landless, marginal, smallholder, medium-sized and large-scale farmers.

In the pre-piloting phase, along with crop farmers, fish farmers or fishermen, livestock farmers and dairy farmers have been included while salt farmers have also been included where applicable.

The cardholders will receive 10 types of services, including agricultural inputs in fair prices, irrigation support, easy loans, subsidies, training, weather updates, crop protection advice, insurance, and fair market access.

According to Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid, the pre-piloting phase will cost around Taka 8.34 crore. After this phase, a pilot programme will be launched in 15 upazilas across the country by August this year.

Utilizing experiences of the pre-pilot and pilot schemes, the government will gradually distribute the card among all farmers and create a database across the country over the next four years.

The Farmer Card will function as a banking debit card linked to accounts opened at Sonali Bank. As of April 11, data of 22,065 farmers have been collected, including 2,246 landless, 9,458 marginal, 8,967 smallholders, 1,303 medium-sized and 91 large-scale farmers.

The cardholders will be able to purchase agricultural inputs such as fertilizer, seeds, fish feed, and livestock feed through Point of Sell (POS) machines provided to concerned dealers.

Washington and Tehran held historic face-to-face talks in Islamabad over the weekend, but failed to reach an immediate agreement on ending the war in the Middle East.

“Efforts are underway to bring both parties back to the table, of course we want them back in Islamabad, but the venue is not final yet,” said the source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject matter.

“The meeting could take place soon though dates have yet to be confirmed,” the source said.

The source added: “We are also working to get the ceasefire extended beyond the current deadline to allow for additional time.”

A second official, who also requested anonymity, said the talks were possible before the ceasefire deadline ends next week.

“No date and venue has been decided yet,” he said.

The first official said Islamabad was “the preferred venue” for Pakistan, but that nothing had yet been finalised.

“The written outlines of demands and concessions have already been shared, so both parties are aware of the potential trade-offs,” the official added.

“The government will gradually distribute farmer card among small and marginal farmers across the country. There is no room for political bias or any kind of irregularities in the process,” he said.

He was speaking to journalists after distributing farmer card in Abaipur Union under Shailkupa Upazila of Jhenaidah where a total of 1,679 farmers from the Kripalpur block of Abaipur Union received the cards in the first phase under a pilot project.

The minister also noted that since assuming office, the government has been fulfilling its electoral promises.

“The government has already waived agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000 for farmers. Today, the distribution of farmer cards has begun,” he said.

He also said that canal excavation programmes are also being implemented nationwide to increase agricultural production.

Asaduzzaman added that the government is continuously working to improve the living standards of farmers.

Earlier, the inauguration ceremony of the farmer card distribution was held at Kripalpur Government Primary School in Abaipur Union, where Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined virtually.

Among others present at the event were District Commissioner Noman Hossain, Superintendent of Police Mahfuz Afzal, District Council Administrator M. A. Majid, District BNP General Secretary Zahiduzzaman Mona, and Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md. Kamruzzaman.
