Dhaka, August 8, 2026: A new chapter has begun in the life of Sharmin Akter, a visually impaired young woman from Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira District, as she has secured employment with Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL), the government-owned pharmaceutical manufacturing company.

Ashrafuzzaman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL), said, “We are delighted to welcome Sharmin Akter, an educated and determined young woman who has overcome numerous adversities, into the EDCL family. Background
Sharmin Akter, a visually impaired young woman from Shyamnagar, Satkhira, has overcome significant challenges in her life. On July 30, she received her appointment letter from the Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain. She is set to begin her professional career as a Junior Officer at Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) from August 2.
Earlier, during the Hon’ble Health Minister’s visit to Satkhira Hospital on July 26, Sharmin Akter shared her personal struggles and difficult circumstances with the Minister and requested an employment opportunity. Hearing her situation, the Hon’ble Minister immediately assured her that she would be provided with a job opportunity.
To implement the Minister’s humanitarian initiative, A. K. Md. Ashrafuzzaman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EDCL, took prompt and effective steps. In accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, he gave the matter due priority and initiated the necessary legal and administrative procedures to complete Sharmin Akter’s appointment expeditiously.
After receiving the opportunity to begin her professional career, Sharmin Akter expressed her profound gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain for their support and humanitarian initiative.
