EDCL Takes Initiative to Establish Vaccine Production Unit at Bogura Plant Under the Leadership of MD & CEO A. K. M. Ashrafuzzaman

To further strengthen the supply of quality medicines and vaccines within the country’s public healthcare system, Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) has taken an initiative to expand production activities at its Bogura Plant. As part of this initiative, plans have been undertaken to establish a new production unit aimed at manufacturing vaccines for dengue and other important diseases.

The expansion initiative at the Bogura Plant is progressing under the visionary leadership, planning and initiative of EDCL Managing Director & CEO A. K. M. Ashrafuzzaman. Under his leadership, plans have been developed to utilize unused infrastructure and existing capacity for establishing new production facilities, which are expected to play an important role in strengthening public health protection in the country.

A vaccine production unit is planned on approximately 25,000 square feet of vacant space at the Bogura Plant. Once operational, the unit will create an opportunity to produce vaccines for dengue and other significant diseases domestically. In addition, there are plans to establish another cephalosporin production unit in the future.

The EDCL Bogura Plant has long been producing essential and life-saving medicines for government hospitals and healthcare institutions. At present, the plant produces various types of capsules, injections and other essential medicines. Expansion of its production capacity will help ensure a more uninterrupted supply of essential medicines to government hospitals across the country.

Currently, the Bogura Plant produces several important medicines, including Cefixime 200 mg and 400 mg capsules, Cephradine 500 mg capsules, and Ceftriaxone 1 g and 500 mg injections, among others.

Once implemented, the initiative is expected to have a positive impact in three key areas: ensuring affordable supplies of life-saving medicines and vaccines to government hospitals, reducing dependence on imports, and saving public funds. At the same time, it will further enhance the production capacity and self-reliance of the country’s pharmaceutical sector.

The expansion of the Bogura Plant is being viewed as a timely and significant initiative aimed at strengthening public health protection, achieving greater self-sufficiency in the supply of medicines to government healthcare facilities, and ensuring access to affordable healthcare for the people of Bangladesh.
